Migrating an established ecommerce operation is not simply a matter of switching platforms.
When a business is already processing thousands of orders, managing a catalog with thousands of products, and connecting its ecommerce operation with inventory, logistics, and internal systems, a migration means rebuilding a critical part of its digital infrastructure without interrupting sales.
That was the challenge facing Dermotienda, one of Peru’s leading dermocosmetics retailers, with a presence in Ecuador and Chile.
Its ecommerce operation was running on Magento, but the brand’s growth called for a more flexible, stable, and easier-to-manage infrastructure.
The goal was not simply to launch a new online store.
It was to build a technology platform capable of supporting Dermotienda’s next stage of growth.
The decision was to migrate to Shopify Plus.
The challenge: modernizing an ecommerce operation that was already running at scale
Unlike building a store from scratch, migrating an established ecommerce operation means preserving years of data, processes, and digital positioning.
Dermotienda had a catalog of more than 4,000 products, along with hundreds of thousands of records associated with customers and historical orders.
The migration had to be completed while maintaining business continuity and preserving critical business information.
But there was an additional challenge: the ecommerce operation did not work in isolation.
The store needed to remain connected to the systems supporting Dermotienda’s day-to-day operations, including inventory and order management.
That meant the project could not be limited to simply moving products from Magento to Shopify.
We needed to rebuild the entire ecommerce ecosystem on top of a new architecture.
From Magento to Shopify Plus: a comprehensive migration
Cluster led the migration to Shopify Plus across multiple fronts: data, storefront, user experience, integrations, and operations.
1. Migrating products, customers, and orders
We developed a process to migrate and reorganize the information stored in Magento within Shopify’s new architecture.
The project included:
- More than 4,000 products
- Historical customer data
- Hundreds of thousands of customer and order records
- Business-critical information required to maintain operational continuity
- Catalog restructuring and indexing
- Preservation of SEO-relevant information
The goal was for Shopify to launch with the historical context the business needed, while making the platform transition as seamless as possible for both Dermotienda and its customers.
2. A new storefront designed to convert
The migration also created an opportunity to completely rethink the shopping experience.
The new storefront was built with a mobile-first approach, optimizing navigation, product discovery, product pages, cart interactions, and the checkout journey.
This was particularly important for Dermotienda.
In a category such as dermocosmetics, customers need to explore a broad catalog, compare brands, understand product benefits, and quickly find the right product before making a purchase decision.
The new experience was designed to reduce these friction points and create a simpler journey from discovery to conversion.
Shopify also gave Dermotienda’s ecommerce team greater control over day-to-day operations, reducing its dependency on developers for commercial updates and routine changes.
3. Shopify Plus and Odoo integration
One of the most important components of the project was keeping the storefront connected to Dermotienda’s operational infrastructure.
To achieve this, we developed an integration between Shopify Plus and Odoo, enabling the synchronization of critical inventory and order management processes.
With this architecture, Shopify operates as the commerce platform, while Odoo continues to support the company’s internal operational processes.
This creates a clear separation of responsibilities:
Shopify focuses on the commerce experience, while Odoo supports the operational side of the business.
The integration layer developed by Cluster enables both ecosystems to work together in a coordinated way.
4. A logistics architecture adapted to the operation
Dermotienda’s operation also required specific business rules related to product availability and fulfillment.
To support these requirements, we implemented dedicated components that connect Dermotienda’s logistics needs with Shopify’s capabilities.
The objective was to preserve the business rules required by the operation without unnecessarily transferring all that complexity to the storefront.
This allows Shopify to remain a stable commerce core, while operation-specific rules can be handled through specialized integrations and services.
The moment of truth: going live
A migration of this scale is truly tested when real traffic and orders begin flowing through the new platform.
Following the go-live, Dermotienda processed thousands of orders within the first hours of operation.
That volume quickly validated one of the project’s main objectives: having an infrastructure capable of handling significant levels of demand without traffic growth becoming a technology bottleneck.
Following the launch, the project entered a period of stabilization and monitoring, during which Cluster supported the operation and made adjustments across the different components of the ecommerce ecosystem.
The results of the migration
The migration did more than replace Magento with Shopify Plus.
It changed the way Dermotienda can operate and scale its digital commerce channel.
+37% in mobile conversion
One of the most significant results following the launch was an approximately 37% increase in mobile conversion.
This is particularly relevant considering that a significant share of ecommerce traffic now comes from smartphones.
The combination of an optimized storefront, better performance, and a lower-friction purchasing journey helped turn a greater share of existing traffic into orders.
-42% in operational time
The new architecture also helped reduce the time spent on certain ecommerce operational tasks by approximately 42%.
Shopify shifted a significant part of day-to-day ecommerce management into tools that can be used directly by commercial and ecommerce teams.
The impact of a technology migration, therefore, should not be measured only in terms of speed or performance.
It should also be measured by how much time the team gets back to operate and grow the business.
An infrastructure built for major traffic peaks
Another key objective was to remove infrastructure as a concern during campaigns and periods of high demand.
With Shopify Plus, Dermotienda now has an infrastructure designed to scale and support high levels of traffic and transactions.
This allows the team to focus on campaigns, products, customers, and growth rather than having to continuously plan infrastructure capacity around each new commercial peak.
From a technology migration to a regional platform
Perhaps the most important outcome of the project is not only what happened during the launch.
It is what Dermotienda can do next.
The architecture was designed from the beginning with the brand’s regional expansion in mind.
With the Peruvian operation stabilized, the infrastructure developed on Shopify can serve as a foundation for deploying new operations in markets such as Chile and Ecuador, reusing the experience, integrations, and components already built.
Instead of rebuilding the ecommerce operation from scratch every time the brand enters a new country, Dermotienda can start from a proven technology architecture and adapt payments, logistics, catalog structure, and business rules to the requirements of each market.
More than a platform migration
The Dermotienda case demonstrates an important distinction.
Migrating from Magento to Shopify Plus is not simply about replacing one technology with another.
When executed properly, a migration can simplify the technology architecture, reduce technical dependency, improve the shopping experience, and create a foundation on which the business can continue to grow.
Dermotienda moved from a Magento-based operation to an ecosystem powered by Shopify Plus, Odoo, specialized integrations, and an architecture designed to evolve alongside the business.
The project in numbers
4,000+ products migrated
99.7% uptime
Hundreds of thousands of historical customer and order records
+37% mobile conversion
-42% operational time
The result is a more modern, flexible, and scalable ecommerce operation, built not only to meet Dermotienda’s current needs, but also to support its growth into new markets.
