10 things we learned from e-commerce that no one is going to tell you | Chapter 3

In this edition we will talk about a technical issue that breaks the head of every Ecommerce Manager, if you are one of the people who loses sleep over a poor rating in Google PageSpeed, first of all, I want to tell you that you are not the only one, I have kept up all night many nights trying to raise a point ac / u of the Ecommerce of our clients and in that way we have learned a lot.

If you don't know what PageSpeed is, I'll explain it to you in a few words, it's a tool developed by Google to give your website a score based on an infinite number of technical criteria that allow it to infer that your website is slow or fast and therefore it will offer a poor and inefficient browsing experience, even penalizing your organic positioning as a result of not keeping your website optimized, here I share ten lessons related to loading time and Google Page Speed:

1) First of all , Google is so strict that they don't even have a good score, the score should not make you lose sleep (+50 on mobile is healthy) but the detailed report where Google emphasizes the need for hygiene it has The source code of your Ecommerce can look great, but if you have hundreds of thousands of obsolete codes nested inside, it is likely that you will find so many redflags that you will not know where to start.

2) Optimized images , there is a standard that allows specific image sizes to be delivered depending on the device from which it is consumed, we use four, low-end phones, phones with retina screens, 13-14 screens and 15-30 inch screens. Any Ecommerce platform (Shopify, Vtex, Magento or Bigcommerce) can be configured to deliver optimized images the way we do today, except Woocommerce or Prestashop, which you will have to use some kind of plugin to do it.

3) Use of CDN (Content delivery Network) , most Ecommerce platforms have it by default, even Shopify was the one who invented the CDN concept, but if you have an ecommerce running with Prestashop or Woocommerce you won't have it, the important thing about this is that a CDN is in charge of using multiple servers to deliver the content (images and static resources) that allows not to stress the main server and greatly improves the loading time.

4) Hygiene , there is nothing that Google and, in fact, any Developer like more than a website that has an orderly, optimal code and without redflags, therefore it is important that, just as when you order the closet, you do the same with the source code of your e-commerce template, this cleaning is a job that in our case we do permanently, which is why today our e-commerce enjoy healthy scores, but as long as you do it at least twice a month you will earn a better score and your users will thank you.

5) Excess of third-party scripts , it is common, especially on open source platforms (Prestashop or Woocommerce), to use an infinite number of plugins that help customize your e-commerce, the problem is that each script you add makes the page heavier, that's why we suggest always do without the famous, drag and drop, to enjoy a good score the best thing we have found in this case is to create customizations ourselves with pure code.
